Iconic brand, centennial anniversary, legions of faithful fans, and millions more to convert: the Black & Decker 100th Anniversary site was an exercise in balance. Touting a brand’s fascinating past–including drills made from gun parts and drills on moon landings—yet focusing on a history of innovation moving forward made for an interesting design challenge.
The overall clean feel of the user-friendly site, and fortuitous uses of Flash allowed for the insertion of historical items, such as old logos and black and white photos, but in a way that couched them in a modern, technologically efficient environment; the evolving logo on the homepage and the interactive timeline being just a few examples. A Flash-based Dustbuster Derby game, where the iconic Dustbuster chases down a scruffy “dust bunny” lends a humorous, family-friendly feel. It all adds up to a brand experience that reinforces Black & Decker as an innovative member of the family through many generations and many generations to come.
