Campus Blood Donor Challenge

We know a few things about college students. They spend a lot of time in social media. Their identity is strongly connected to their alma mater. They want to do good. (They also like beer and loud music but that didn’t help in this case!)

The Red Cross challenged Netplus with waking up this young demo to the importance of giving blood. We created a Facebook app to inspire and stoke the competitive spirit among college students and alumnae; not only would it tally blood donations but it would credit individual schools in a dynamic listing. Instant bragging rights—if your school is near the top!

Each donation is marked for friends, fellow students or alums to see. They also receive a reminder message for repeat blood donation on their Facebook page. This creates an opportunity for current donors to share to recruit new donors with a click. It’s also a cool tool for on-campus organizers to use to increase participation among students in regular on-campus drives.

At launch, Netplus collaborated with the American Red Cross national marketing team to identify and select social media influencers as well as all established Red Cross outreach channels. The application got five out of five star reviews and is making a meaningful difference as young adults commit to blood donation.
